"Celebrating 10" Exhibit Marks The Art Emporium's Downtown Anniversary
Art Emporium is celebrating the 10th year at its current location, 823 Quarrier Street in downtown Charleston, by hosting its first-ever open invitational exhibit, "Celebrating 10."
To symbolize the anniversary, more than 100 10" x 10" works were submitted. The opening reception for this exhibit will during the FestivAll edition of ArtWalk Thursday, June 25th. Attendees vote for their favorite piece in the exhibit, and the top three vote recipients will be awarded cash prizes.
Art Emporium is proud of its 30-year heritage and longstanding commitment to Charleston’s art scene. Its downtown roots began in 1985 in the Charleston Town Center as one of the original tenants and part of a national chain. Art Emporium was originally geared towards art supplies, creative kids’ products and custom picture framing.
In 1992, Peter Bramberg, one of the original Koenig Art Emporium chain employees, moved purchased the store, moved to Charleston (in that order) and transitioned it into a local retailer with a better understanding of what customers in the area needed. The new location shifted its focus to customer picture framing with the understanding that customers wanted local framers working on their keepsakes and art. Custom framing became the mainstay of the business with a reputation for the best selection, quality and customer service in the area.
In 2002, local entrepreneur Traci Higginbotham joined Art Emporium to help Bramberg run and grow the business. Higginbotham brought a tremendous amount of knowledge about the local art scene and her many years as a successful retailer proved valuable in improving Art Emporium's standing in the art and business community.
The Art Emporium moved from the Town Center Mall to the current downtown location in 2004, offering a variety of affordable local art, pottery, jewelry and glassware and giving emerging and established artists a new venue to sell their work.
The dynamics of Charleston's downtown and the new, expanded location turned out to be a huge success. In 2007, The Art Emporium grew its commitment to local artists by expanding the store into the adjacent space and opened a 2000-square foot gallery to highlight local art. The gallery has become a mainstay of downtown art and one of the more popular venues of the Charleston ArtWalk and FestivALL.
In 2013, Higginbotham became co-owner of Art Emporium and now runs the day-to-day operations. She is also the head picture framer, and in this dual role as General Manager and framer, she continues to carry on the long tradition of ensuring that Art Emporium offers the finest in custom framing and affordable local art while providing excellent customer service. Art Emporium is proud of its 10 year commitment to being in the heart of downtown Charleston.
Come join us in "Celebrating 10" by being a part of this new exhibit during the month of June!
