Gallery Eleven, at 1025 Quarrier Street, will showcase the work of Arthur Evans.
Evans is a portrait artist who seeks out interesting faces to paint. The exhibit contains a portrait of a coal miner whose face caught his attention.
“In Russian, the word for ‘human being’ translates to ‘face of ages,’” Evans said. “This, to me, is a face of ages – so worn by the hard work in the mines it could be considered a very bleak story. But he can laugh as well, be proud or strong, raise a family, be remembered as a father –through the ages!”
Gallery Eleven is also celebrating its 40th year as an artist co-op this month. The gallery launched in 1975 with eleven artists. Today, 18 artists make up the co-op, which is the largest in the state.
