The Clay Center is partnering with Riggs Commercial Reality to bring you unexpected art experiences in a variety of downtown locations. This month we are exhibiting a show by Leah Gore at Masonic Temple at 107 Hale Street. Leah is an emerging artist living in Charleston, West Virginia who recently completed her BFA in Painting from Marshall University. She is a Multi-media artist who gathers and manipulates materials based on location and thereby documents human presence, similar to that of a chef who forages and composes a dish utilizing local ingredients.
“The Dutch Oven Bakery of Southern West Virginia burned down almost forty years ago. My grandparents lost everything. I wanted to create a show based on this tragedy I never witnessed physically, only by memory. Blue collar materiality, Appalachian history, and the documentation of the baker’s hand are my influences for these pieces.” – Leah Gore
