The Art Store showing the exhibit Teacher • Student • Doyenne

We will be showing the exhibit Teacher • Student • Doyenne starting March 3 and running thru April 3.

June Kilgore 1927 – 2006, born in Huntington, West Virginia, Kilgore was an abstract expressionist painter who was a professor of Art and department head at Marshall University. She was considered one of West Virginia’s most distinguished art educators. Her work conveys a strong sense of the spiritual and a very emotional means of communication. The structure of the image is open, a space with airiness and volume. The energy is achieved with many variations in color, tension, active gestural brush strokes and developed layers of paint.

Caryl Toth, A Winfield, West Virginia resident, Toth does abstract work that is rich with paint; warm, polished surfaces, built-up textures, intense colors overpainted with metallics and marks that dance in and out of the surface. Toth was a student of June Kilgore at Marshall University where she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Art. Toth has exhibited at The Art Store since 1978. She says, “Painting is a place I go to find myself, an endless quest for my reality.”

Eleanor Schaul, Born in 1937 in Massachusetts, Schaul was educated at Parson’s School of Design. She has been a practicing artist for over 50 years, has exhibited at The Art Store since 1976 and has been an active supporter of the arts in West Virginia and the region.

Schaul has made a career out of nuance. Her paintings are often more than what they seem at first glance. Each piece conveys a sense of place in their own subtle way.
